A process for producing a highly unsaturated fatty acid with a high purity in high yield is provided, the process mitigating drawbacks of conventional techniques. Provided is a method for purifying a highly unsaturated fatty acid and/or a derivative thereof, the method including a step (a) in which a first raw material including the substance(s) and a first aqueous silver salt solution are contacted with each other and stirred and a first oily layer and a first aqueous layer are recovered, a step (b) in which the first aqueous layer is separated into a second aqueous silver salt solution and the substance(s), and a step (c) in which the first oily layer and the second aqueous silver salt solution are contacted with each other and stirred and this mixture is separated into an oily layer and an aqueous layer, thereby obtaining a second aqueous layer containing the substance(s).
