A backlight assembly and a flat display device having the same are provided to prevent the yellowing of a peripheral unit surrounding a lamp, thereby extending the lifetime of the flat display device, by improving molecular weight and component of a material constituting the peripheral unit. A backlight assembly(70) comprises a light source(76) and a peripheral unit formed below or beside the light source. The peripheral unit is configured to fix and support the light source. The peripheral unit includes a bottom chassis(75), a lamp holder(74), a lamp support(110), and a frame mold side(10). At least one component element of the peripheral unit is formed of a material including a polymer resin having an average molecular weight of 40,000 or more.
