PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress an optical scanning failure that a peak value of optical amount distribution of optical beams irradiating to a scanning surface becomes the greatest in the vicinity of the optical axis of a scanning optical system and decreases as it separates away from the optical axis in a main scanning direction. SOLUTION: The scanner controlling method includes: an exposure signal correction step of producing a correction exposure signal by converting a pulse width of an exposure signal on the basis of a following conversion pattern; and beam modulation step of modulating optical beams by the correction exposure signal while controlling the optical amount of the optical beams emitted from an optical source on the basis of a following an optical amount pattern. The conversion pattern shortens the pulse width of the pulse according to a distance in the main scanning direction between an irradiation region corresponding to the pulse and the optical axis of the scanning optical system, and the optical amount pattern increases the optical amount of the optical beams according to a distance in the main scanning direction between an irradiation region of the optical beams emitted from the optical source and the optical axis of the scanning optical system.
