PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for advantageously producing whitened cured spherical novolak type phenol resin particles usable by giving a desired color thereto without the presence of residual salts, and to provide the whitened cured spherical novolak type phenol resin particles. SOLUTION: The novolak type phenol resin particles are produced. In the process, bisphenols represented by general formula (I) (wherein, R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are each independently a 1-8C alkyl group) are reacted with aldehydes in water containing protective colloids using oxalic acid and an alkylbenzenesulfonic acid having a≥10C alkyl group in combination as a catalyst.
