摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide methods for extracting oils derived from a microbe or single cell containing one or more polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), directly from microbial cells without the need for solvents.SOLUTION: The invention provides a method in which the microbial cells after fermentation are pasteurised and washed, and the cell walls are lysed or disrupted by a mechanical (e.g. homogenization), physical (boiling or drying), chemical (solvents) or enzymatic (cell wall degrading enzymes) technique, and the oil including PUFA is separated from the resulting cell wall debris by centrifugation, which results in an oily phase (top layer) containing the oil which can be separated from an aqueous phase (containing the cell wall debris). Then, the oil can be extracted and if necessary the PUFA can be purified or isolated from the oil.SELECTED DRAWING: None
