PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inter-vehicle distance control device which can control an inter-vehicle distance to a distance at which a driver can visually recognize a traffic signal according to a positional relationship between an own vehicle and the traffic signal, and an inter-vehicle distance control method.SOLUTION: A brake starting point being a position in which a brake for stopping an own vehicle MC is started is calculated by using a positional relationship between a stop line SL corresponding to a traffic signal 64 and the own vehicle MC and the vehicle speed of the own vehicle MC, a first inter-vehicle distance Xbeing an inter-vehicle distance at which a driver of the own vehicle MC which has arrived at the brake starting point can visually recognize the traffic signal 64 is calculated by using a distance from the brake starting point up to the traffic signal 64 existing forward of the vehicle fore-and-aft direction of the own vehicle MC, a height Yof the traffic signal 64, and a height Yof a blocking portion for blocking a visual field forward of the vehicle fore-and-aft direction viewed from the driver of the own vehicle MC out of preceding vehicles LC at the highest position. The inter-vehicle distance is controlled to a first inter-vehicle distance Xat least at the brake starting point. |
