Hydroelectric power system

A hydroelectric pumped storage system includes an upper reservoir 1 and a lower reservoir 2 in fluid communication, via a conduit 4. The lower reservoir 2 is in fluid communication with a tidal body of water 18. A turbine 8 is located below the high tide level in the lower reservoir 2 and is driven by water flowing in the conduit 4 from the upper reservoir to the lower reservoir. The lower reservoir is separated from the tidal water e.g. by a dam 14 to maintain the water level above the tide level when the tide goes out. The system uses the turbine 8 to pump water to the upper reservoir 1 when the water in the lower reservoir 2 is held above the low tide level by the damming means 14. The energy required is therefore reduced as water is always pumped from around high tide level.
