A mobile terminal and a method for generating an EPG using an optical character recognition(OCR) function are provided to reduce a service rate that has to be paid through the wireless Internet in order to collect EPG. An image document about a TV channel guide is obtained(S10). Character data included in the obtained image document are OCR read out(S20). A database is constructed based on the read character data(S30). Electronic program guide(EPG) information is generated through the constructed database. The EPG information is displayed(S50). The character data includes information of the TV channel guide. The information of the TV channel guide includes a channel name, a program broadcasting time, a program name, and names of an MC and performers.
