A dual mode power train for a hybrid electric vehicle and a method of operating the same are provided to secure wider range of shift ratio where efficiency of the power train is high, and to operate the power train more efficiently according to change of shift ratio. A dual mode power train for a hybrid electric vehicle comprises: a first planetary gear set(13) including a first sun gear(3) connected to a first motor generator(1) and a first carrier(7) connected to a driving wheel(5) and a first ring gear(11) connected to an engine, a second planetary gear set(23) including a second sun gear(15) connected to the first ring gear and a second ring gear(19) connected to a second motor generator(17) and a second carrier(21), a first clutch(25) for connecting and disconnecting the first sun gear to the second carrier, and a second clutch(27) for converting the second carrier between a fixed state and a rotatable state.
