<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which forms many images by retaining only a small amount of data by the use of image information having a registered file name of image data and the like. <P>SOLUTION: This image forming apparatus comprises a CPU 1, an operating portion 2, an image transfer control portion 3, an image data expansion portion 4, a storage portion 5, and a printing portion 6. The image information 7 such as a name of compressed image data is retained in the storage portion 5. When a printing request is inputted from the operating portion 2, the image information of an adjusting pattern to be printed is read out from the storage portion 5, and an address of a storage medium in which the compressed image data for use are retained is recognized from the read image information.
