PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To downsize a dimension of a variable valve gear of an internal combustion engine in the intake/exhaust direction. SOLUTION: A plurality of sub rocker arms which are oscillated/driven by cams 71, 72 provided for cam shafts 26, 27 and are mutually connected/disconnected by connection mechanisms 52, 53 are composed of first to fifth sub rocker arms 31-35 arranged in parallel with each other. The connection mechanisms include a first outside connection mechanism 52 for connecting/disconnecting the first/second sub rocker arms 31, 32 and a second outside connection mechanism 53 for connecting/disconnecting the fourth/fifth sub rocker arms 34, 35. As the first/second outside connection mechanisms 52, 53, seen from a direction of a cam shaft axial line L2, overlap at least a part of a plug tube 70, the dimension of the variable valve gear 14 in the intake/exhaust direction can be downsized.
