A MOS type solid-state image pickup device is provided with a pixel section (110) having image pickup elements two-dimensionally arranged; a read-out shift register (111); an electronic shutter shift register (112); a signal processing section (113) for taking out a pixel signal from a selected pixel; a horizontal shift register (114) for outputting a row selection signal; and an amplifying circuit (115) for amplifying the taken out pixel output signal. The shift registers (111, 112) have a function of generating a dummy pulse during a blanking period, and in the blanking period after completion of last row scanning, the selection signals are alternately outputted from the last row (m) of the shift register and a previous row (m-1).
