PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate two optical two-tone signals, the frequency interval between which is four times the frequency of input RF signals and that can realize generation of microwaves, millimeter waves and terahertz waves, by using two dual parallel Mach-Zehnder modulators (DP-MZM).SOLUTION: Two DP-MZM (dual parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator) type optical modulators each having first and second subordinate Mach-Zehnder interferometers arranged in parallel on an upper arm and a lower arm, respectively, and a third main Mach-Zehnder interferometer consisting of an upper arm and a lower arm are cascade-connected, and a phase difference Δφis given between RF signals inputted to the first and second subordinate Mach-Zehnder interferometers of the first DP-MZM type optical modulator and RF signals inputted to the first and second subordinate Mach-Zehnder interferometers of the second DP-MZM type optical modulator.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 5 |
