PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ultraviolet light emitting element that can suppress time-dependent decrease in emission intensity.SOLUTION: An ultraviolet light emitting element includes: a first substrate 10; a plurality of electrodes 20 that are located on a main surface of the first substrate 10; a dielectric layer 30 that is located on the main surface of the first substrate 10 and covers the plurality of electrodes 20; a light emitting layer 40 which is located on the dielectric layer 30 and emits ultraviolet light and which is thicker in a first region 92 than in a second region 93, the first region being on the dielectric layer 30 and different from the second region 93, and the second region including at least a part of a region directly above the plurality of electrodes 20; and a second substrate 11 that is located to face the light emitting layer 40. Predetermined gas is filled in a discharge space 12 between the first substrate 10 and the second substrate 11. The light emitting layer 40 emits the ultraviolet light due to electrical discharge between the plurality of electrodes 20 in the gas.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
