In this elevator device, a handrail movable part (8) can move vertically with respect to a handrail base unit (7), between a normal position and a lowered position. A holding mechanism (9) mechanically holds the handrail movable part in the normal position. The holding mechanism comprises a release lever (10). An actuating member (11) is provided above the landing at the topmost floor in the hoistway. When the elevator car has risen past the normal range of movement, the actuating member (11) contacts and displaces the release lever (10), thereby lowering the handrail movable part (8) to the lowered position.
