A coil spring supported on a guide member, said coil spring being manufactured from a linear body and subjected to a surface-hardening process. The linear body has a central layer, and a hardened layer formed on the outside of the central layer by a surface-hardening process and having a higher hardness than that of the central layer. The line diameter of the linear body is no greater than 1 mm. The surface hardness of the linear body is at least Hv 250 higher than the surface hardness of the guide member. The coil spring has both excellent abrasion resistance and excellent ductility.
