<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem that a conventional ATM is only about 90.5% in transmission efficiency in a criterion for each cell since only 48 bytes are for payload data in an ATM cell of 53 bytes. <P>SOLUTION: The present invention relates to an exemplary technology for compressing ATM cells by substituting reduced headers for original headers. A header table is first held at the side of a transmitter terminal, and respective headers are stored in entries of the header table on the basis of table indexes generated from hash functions applied to the headers. A copy of said header table is then also maintained at a receiving side, and contents of the header table are updated at an idle cell. When the reduced ATM cell is received at the side of a receiver terminal, the reduced ATM cell is replaced with the original header which is restored with the copy of the header table held at the side of the receiver terminal.
