<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device for automatically setting spatial resolution of dynamic image by which the spatial resolution of a dynamic image to be encoded can be switched automatically depending upon the nature of the image even when the image is in the process of encoding. SOLUTION: The method for automatically setting spatial resolution of dynamic image includes a step of compression-encoding an inputted dynamic image by dividing the image into a plurality of blocks, a step of decoding the image encoded in the compression-encoding step, and a step of calculating the strains of the blocks from the image decoded in the decoding step. The method also includes a resolution deciding step of selecting resolution lower than the present spatial resolution when it is discriminated that the strains of the blocks are larger than a first threshold by comparing the strains with the first threshold or resolution higher than the present spatial resolution when it is discriminated that the strains of the blocks are smaller than a second threshold by comparing the strains with the second threshold.</p> |
