The system has a control unit (17) for controlling a piezoelectric element (1) comprising a stack of piezoelectric ceramic layers (3). An electrode layer (5) is provided between the ceramic layers, where one of the ceramic layers serves as a substrate of the control unit. The control unit has a power output stage arranged on a partial substrate of the unit. The control unit has a computing unit designed as a microcontroller or an application-specific integrated circuit. The control unit communicates with a superior controller (200) over a data connection implemented as a serial bus system.
