PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To clean the surface of a photoreceptor by making good use of the operation of the photoreceptor and an intermediate transfer body, and also, to prevent the defect of image quality due to a scratch on the surface of the photoreceptor even when the operation is performed, regarding the electrophotographic image forming apparatus. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: the image carrier 11 having a surface to be charged; an charging means 12 for charging the surface to be charged; an exposure means 13 for forming an electrostatic latent image on the charged surface; a developing means 14 for developing the electrostatic latent image so as to form a toner image; the intermediate transfer body 3 to which the toner image is primarily transferred; transfer means 4Y, 4M, 4C and 4K for transferring secondarily the toner image on the intermediate transfer body 3 to a transferred body; a refresh execution means for cleaning the charged surface of the image carrier 11 by operating the image carrier 11 and the intermediate transfer body 3 at different linear velocities when an image is not formed; and a toner supply means for supplying the toner in between the image carrier 11 and the intermediate transfer body 3 when the cleaning operation is performed.
