A pressure vessel with conical base from which the sludge is extracted, is fed continuously with the syrup to be filtered. A large number of tubular filters are suspended from the top and grouped in sets corresponding to the number of phases of the process or an even numbered multiple thereof. Each group leads to a collector tank whence a pipe leads to an external gallery connected by solenoid valves to a filtrate outlet pipe, a dross outlet pipe and a flushing liquid inlet pipe. The valves are controlled by a rotary multiple cam unit with adjustable cams for setting the phase timings.
