1386513 Phosphonate esters CIBA-GEIGY AG 3 May 1972 [13 May 1971] 20639/72 Heading C2P [Also in Divisions C3 and D1] The invention comprises phosphonic esters of the formula where R 1 and R 2 each denote alkyl, alkenyl or haloalkyl with up to 4 carbon atoms, X is H or CH 3 , Y is H or -CH 2 -O-Z, where Z is H or C 1 -C 4 alkyl, and A is alkyl or haloalkyl with up to 4. carbon atoms. They are obtained by reacting a compound (a): with an amide (b): H 2 NCOA, the amide group of one of (a) and (b) being monomethylolated and optionally etherified with a C 1 -C 4 alkanol, optionally methylolating the product with formaldehyde or a formaldehyde donor and optionally etherifying the methylolated product with a C 1 -C 4 alkanol. The reaction is suitably effected at 100-150‹ C. in the presence of an acid catalyst and in an inert organic solvent such as benzene, toluene or xylene. The post-methylolation when carried out is suitably effected by treatment with paraformaldehyde, or preferably with aqueous formaldehyde. The products are useful as flame-proofing agents. |
