<p>1325349 Regulating diesel fuel engines SULZER BROS Ltd 11 Sept 1970 [11 Sept 1969] 43632/70 Heading F1B In a method of operating a diesel engine selectively operable on liquid or gas fuel, the respective quantities of which are controlled by a speed controller 44 through proportioning means, the gas fuel supply pressure is adjusted in dependence on a measured engine operating parameter so as to tend to maintain the value of the parameter the same for gas fuel operation as for liquid fuel operation at any particular value of speed controller output signal. Liquified natural gas is stored in a heatinsulated tank 1 and gas evolved in the tank passes via line 5, heat exchanger 6 and throttle member 11 to a compressor 12 e. g. a multistage centrifugal blower, connected through a valve 20 to a pressure reducer 23 and a pressure detector 22 and also to the engine gas valves (not shown). Modified gas pressure is introduced within bellows 24 which moves a tappet 26 which acts on an adjusting rod 28 to control the fuel delivery from pump 30. Rod 28 is interconnected by a lever 34 to the adjusting rod 35 of a pump 36 which hydraulically controls the operation of the engine gas valves, the pivot 50 of lever 34 being connected through a linkage 41, 42 to a speed controller 44 which is set by a lever 47. When the gas pressure in line 21 exceeds a lower predetermined valve the tappet 26 moves to the left to reduce the liquid fuel quantity and simultaneously increase the gas fuel supply. A torque measuring device 53 on the output shaft 51 acts through a cam and follower 54, 57 and a linkage 58, 60, 61 to vary the position of pivot 50. Lever 60 is pivoted at the end of a rod 62 connected to an astatic pressure regulator in the gas supply line. During gas operation when variations of the colorific value of the gas act through the speed controller to move pivot 50 the lever 60 acts on pressure regulator 63 to adjust the gas pressure. Elements 44, 34, 60 and 54 may be replaced by electrical or hydraulic devices.</p> |
