1345047 Impregnating fibrous material J & P COATS Ltd 14 June 1972 [17 June 1971] 28362/71 Heading D1L , In a method for continuously liquid-impregnating fibrous material the material is fed in the form of a closed loop such that the material approaching and receding from the loop are maintained in contact for a predetermined distance and the impregnating liquid to applied to the material over a desired extent of loop. Apparatus for carrying out the method may comprise a bath 6 filled with impregnating liquid 7 and including an immersed guide roller 5, and a stationary guide ring 9 mounted above the bath 6, the material 2 to be treated being fed through the ring by rollers 8 such that there is contact between the material 3 approaching the bath and that 4 receding therefrom so that excess liquid taken up by the material is wiped off by the material approaching the impregnating liquid. Fig. 3 shows an embodiment in which the contact between the impregnated and non-impregnated lengths of the material takes place between the ends 10A and 11B of swingable arms 10 and 11 respectively mounted on bracket 15 above the bath 6. In Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown) the swingable arms are replaced by guide pulleys mounted on pivotable brackets. The apparatus is particularly suitable for use in the liquid ammonia impregnation of cellulosic products. |
