1367369 Sulphonated olefines PROCTER & GAMBLE CO 12 Oct 1972 [12 Oct 1971] 47125/72 Heading C2C A process for preparing a water-soluble sulphonated reaction product, comprises the steps of: (a) reacting an alpha-olefin having 10 to 20 carbon atoms with from 1À0 to 1À25 moles of gaseous sulphur trioxide (preferably uncomplexed) per mole of alpha-olefin in a film reactor at a temperature from 32-180‹ F., for a time of from 12 to 50 seconds, the pressure at the top of the reactor being from 8 to 20 p.s.i.g., to form a sulphonated mix; (b) immediately reacting the sulphonated mix with an alcohol having 1 to 4 carbon atoms; (c) neutralizing the product of step (b) with an aqueous alkali solution; and (d) hydrolysing the product of step (c). The product is said to comprise (by wt.) 40-45% alkene-1-sulphonates, 20-40% 2-alkoxyalkane- 1-sulphonates, 10-20% 3- and 4-hydroxyalkane-1-sulphonates and 2-15% alkene disulphonates.
