Measuring spools for winding faults - diameters of foot, tip of spool compared withpredetermined reference values

To determine whether a spool has a winding fault e.g. due to being placed incorrectly on the spindle, the tip and foot of its spool are automatically measured prior to orientation in a doffing machine. As the spools are conveyor-fed towards the machine, they pass between fixed and movable feelers. The motion of the movable feeler is amplified and compared with a reference value. The sum, difference or ratio of tip and foot measurements can be compared with a reference value. The reverence value can be changed. Faulty spools can be ejected from the conveyor.
