Metallic Cu is extracted from Cu salts, pref. CuSO4 by adjusting the Cu salt soln. pH to 2.8 - 5 (3.5 - 5), esp. with an alkaline earth metal oxide or hydroxide, to ppte. ferrite ions, heating the soln. to >=70, (90 - 100) degrees C in either a non-oxidising atmos., esp. N2, or in a reducing atmos., esp. H2, stirring the heated soln. and reacting with metallic Fe in order to ppte Cu from soln., while maintaining the non-oxidising or reducing atmos. Wt. ratio of spent metallic Fe to produced metallic Cu is pref. 0.88 to 1. Pptd. Cu is obtd. as a sludge, washed with water set to pH 2.5, to remove ferrite ions, and dried in a non-oxidising atmos. to a powder which is pref. >99.8% pure. Process may take place continuously, using CU salt solns. with up to 35 g/l concn., and is useful for extracting Cu from mine water solns. |
