<p>1323409 Seaming non-metallic sheet material BRANSON INSTRUMENTS INC 2 Aug 1971 36246/71 Heading B5K An ultrasonic seaming machine comprises an anvil 60 over which plastics sheets to be seamed are moved ; an ultrasonic tranducer assembly 20 including a horn 23 to contact the sheets passing over the anvil 60 to effect seaming ; bearing means 16 for mounting the assembly 20 for gravitational sliding movement toward the anvil 60 along an axis parallel to the axis of vibration of the horn 23 while holding the assembly 20 against movement except along this axis; a spring 38 supplementary to gravity urging the assembly 20 along the axis towards the anvil 60; adjustable means 50 for limiting the motion of the assembly 20 in the means 16 toward the anvil 60; and means for adjusting the force of the spring 38 to cause the pressure of the spring against the assembly 20 with gravity to oppose the reaction forces effective upon the assembly 20 as the horn 23 contacts the sheets. As shown in Fig. 3, the assembly 20 slides within a sleeve bearing 16 and is controlled in this sliding movement by a bracket 25 secured to the assembly 20. The bracket 25 is movable by rotation of a compound lever 30, Fig. 6, about the axis of a shaft 31, an arm 34, Fig. 3, on the lever 30 engaging within a slot 35 of the bracket 25. The spring 38, Fig. 7, acts between an arm 36 on the lever 30 and a sliding lug 40 threadably engaged on a shaft 41. Rotation of a knob 42 moves the lug 40 to adjust the tension of the spring 38. The downward movement of the assembly 20 and the horn 23 is limited by a part 56, Fig. 5, of the bracket 25 bearing against a cam 50 integral with a shaft 51 rotatable by a knob 54 to adjust'the position of the cam 50. For lifting the horn 23 away from the anvil 60 without disturbing the setting of the spring pressure on the cam 50, the lever 30 is rotated in the direction of the arrow 80 by movement of an arm 65 thereon through a kneeoperable lever 76, a ball-and-socket joint 75, a shaft 69 and a link 67. A foot treadle (12), Fig. 1 (not shown), controls the speed of rotation of the anvil 60 and thus the feed rate of the sheets to be seamed.</p> |
