摘要 1357708 Making tubular containers; seaming MILPRINT Inc 19 Dec 1972 [10 Jan 1972] 58538/72 Headings B5D and B5K [Also in Division B8] A collapsible tubular container having an end closure of nylon or polyethylene and a tubular body of a single layer monofilm or a multiple layer film is made by wrapping the body blank around a rotating mandrel which holds the end closure in position thereon and heat sealing the tube seam and also the tube to the end closure. The body may comprise a layer of aluminium foil, a polyethylene layer on one or both sides of the foil, a paper layer on the exterior surface and a transparent coating to protect printing on the paper layer. Alternatively the body may be a single sheet of nylon, polyethylene or polypropylene. In making the container, the web forming the body is unwound from a roll, past a folding blade if a turned over edge is required in the body seam and then to a cutter which cuts the web to produce portions equal to the length of the container body. The body and end closure are assembled at twelve stations around a disc 48. At 70 end closures are fed from a hopper 71 to a loading wheel 73 which supplies them to a mandrel 1. At station 46 the cut body length 11 has been delivered by suction fingers 43 to the mandrel which slowly rotates and suction through the mandrel core causes the body to be wrapped around the mandrel. At station 74 heat sealing jaws seal the body to the end closure and a seal bar forms a longitudinal seam along the body. At a station 75, if the end closure is the type that has a flange 7 to be deformed over the end of the tubular body, a heated die 20 is actuated to deform the end closure. At station 76 caps 77 are fed from a hopper 78 to a loading wheel 80, a cap being pressed against the end closure whilst the mandrel is rotated to fasten the cap. Finally, at station 85 the tubes are unloaded by buckets 87 on a belt 86, the containers being unloaded from the mandrel by air pressure applied to the openings in the mandrel previously used to apply vacuum and so wrap the blank around the mandrel. The containers are delivered to a bin 90. The disc 48 rotates at a uniform speed about its hub 49 and cams located on the back of the disc operate air cylinders, loading and unloading devices, and heating elements. Each mandrel is rotated by a gear 53A driven by a motor. The air cylinders could be replaced by mechanically, electrically, or hydraulically operated units. Seaming.-The longitudinal seam is sealed by by a bar 15 containing heating coils, while the seam around the end closure is effected by jaws 16 of semicircular shape and containing heating coils. The seam around the end closure may be reinforced by the reforming of the flange 7 over the seam effected by the jaws 16 as described above.
