Filter press - with inflatable chamber for squeezing cake

A filter press in which provision is made for squeezing the filter cake comprises filter plates each provided with marginally thickened areas with filtrate discharge channels. The plates have flexible sheets which have outwardly extending projections to provide channels for filtrate passing to the sheets from filter cloths, arranged over the sheets. Pressurised fluid is supplied to channels in the plates to expand the sheets outwardly so that filter cake is squeezed between adjacent filter cloths. Filtrate passes to the discharge channels via openings in the sheets and raw liquid enters the filtration chambers formed between adjacent filter cloths via centrally located plate apertures. The filter plates may alternate with further filtrate plates which do not have flexible sheets.
