<p>Aromatic ketones are prepd. by reaction of aromatic cpds., which can be acylated in the aromatic nucleus, with carboxylic acid-chlorides or -anhydrides using as catalyst an >=2 nitro gp. contg. mono- or bi-nuclear aromatic sulphonic acid or its precursor. The aromatic gp. of the sulphonic acid may carry other inert substits. pref. in such posns. as to increase the acidity of the -SO3H gp. and whereby >=2 NO2 gps. are para. and/or ortho to the -SO3H gp. Only very small quantities of catalyst are needed e.g. 0.1-3 mol.% and it is easily recovered.</p> |
