Drying of moist chlorine gas - without formation of chlorine hydrate

Moist Cl2 gas, esp. that produced by the electrolysis of chloride solns., is dried without formation of chlorine hydrate, by bringing it into contact with a cooled aq. salt soln., esp. of NaCl or alternatively KCl, pref. at a concn. of 100-300 g/l. The soln. is sprayed into the moist Cl2, moving in counter stream. The temp. at which chlorine-hydrate can form is reduced by the presence of the salt. The condensed water produced in the cooling process is collected and drawn off from the gas.
