1407359 Mixing apparatus NESTLE SA 20 March 1973 [22 March 1972] 13280/73 Heading B1C In a method of an apparatus for continuously dissolving a pulverulent material in a liquid the pulverulent material is supplied through an open ended duct 7 into the upper end of a chamber 1 and liquid is sprayed on to the falling material through a spray 8 arranged coaxially with the duct 7, a thin film of liquid with partly dissolved material together with recycled solution flowing down the inner surface of the chamber 1. A supply channel 4 for recirculated solution is arranged at the upper edge 2 (which may be notched as shown) of the chamber 1 to assist in the formation of the thin film. A pump 9 provides discharge and recirculation of the solution, a submerged nozzle 11 to which the solution may be recirculated serving to agitate the liquid in the chamber 1. An additional component may be added to the solution from a container 12 by a pump 13. In an example skimmed milk powder is dissolved at a controlled rate in water at 70‹C and milk fat introduced by the pump 13. In a second example skimmed milk powder and sugar are dissolved in water and milk fat introduced by pump 13. Feed and recirculation rates are given in both examples.
