Pyrotechnical mixture for gas development - using an oxidising agent and an organic salt

A pyrotechnical mixture for gas evolution, used to inflate impact cushions used as safely devices in vehicles consists of an oxidising agent, esp. chlorate or perchlorate of Na, K, Li, Ba, Mg or Ca, and an organic salt, pref. a metal formate, oxalate or acid oxalate, although a wide choice is available for effective operation. Pref. the metal in the organic salt has a lower free energy for oxide formation than the free energy for oxidation of CO. The pref. salt is nickel formate. The mixture contains 25-85% wt. oxidising agent with 15-75wt.% organic salt and has a high reaction rate (producing CO2+H2O gases) but a low heat of reaction.
