A spherical envelope of deuterium and tritium of theoretical specific wt., radius 0.5-2 mm and wall thickness 5-30% of than radius, is exposed to the beam of energy from a laser of regulated peak amplitude, pulse shape and pulse repetition frequency. The initial flux creates an outer expanded layer and a subcutaneous compressed layer from which a first implosion shock wave converges into the cone. Successive shock waves produced by raising the laser flux following a specified time function bring about compression ignition and thermonuclear fusion. The pressure rises to between a few hundred and a few thousand g/cm3. Process is compact, lightweight and esp. suitable for space propulsion system.
|
