Appts. for taking measurements in a sampling melts comprises a carriage from which is suspended (a) a probe carrier, (b) means for immersing the probe in the melt, (c) means for stopping the probe at a predetermined depth in the melt consisting of a pipe with a flow the which is introduced into the melt or slag and whose other end is connected to a pneumatic pusher, which forms part of (d) means for holding the probe at a predetermined depth and for a predetermined time in the melt, and (e) means for withdrawing the probe from the melt. Partic. in (c) the pipe has no pressurised fluid supply means.
