1426233 Substituted phenyl carbamates and pesticidal uses thereof BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 25 June 1973 [26 June 1972] 30011/73 Heading C2C The invention comprises compounds of Formula I wherein R1 represents H or -CH 3 ; R2 denotes H or C 1-6 alkyl; R3 denote H, -CH 3 or C 2 H 5 or a C 1-6 alkyl group substituted with halogen, methoxy, ethoxy, methylthio or ethylthio, or acetyl; and R4 denotes C 1-3 alkyl, chloroethyl or acetyl. These compounds may be prepared by reacting a phenol of Formula II wherein R2, R3 and R4 have the above meanings with either (a) methyl isocyanate, or (b) N- methylcarbamyl chloride or N,N-dimethylcarbamyl chloride, or (c) first phosgene to form chloroformate, and then methylamine or dimethylamine. Alternatively these compounds may be prepared by reacting a carbamate of Formula III where R1 has the above meanings, with either (a) an α-halo ether of Formula IV or (b) an acetal or ketal of formula where R2, R3 and R4 have the above meanings, in the molar ratio of 1 : 1 and in the presence of acid catalyst, or (c) a substituted vinyl ether. In Example Ia, the intermediate o-(α-methoxy- #-chloro)-ethoxyphenol is obtained by treating 1,2-dichloroethyl methyl ether with pyrocatechol, and in Example 5a, the intermediate o-(1- methoxy)-ethoxyphenol is prepared by treating pyrocatechol with methyl vinyl ether, or by treating pyrocatechol with α-chloroethyl methyl ether. The invention also comprises a pesticidal composition which contains as an active ingredient a compound according to the invention together with a solid or liquid carrier.
