A process for the preparation of a detergent composition with improved free-flowing properties comprises heat-drying an aqueous slurry containing a water-soluble alkali metal salt of nitrilotriacetic acid, an alkali metal tripolyphosphate, a non-ionic synthetic detergent, an anionic synthetic detergent and from nil to less than the total amount of the alkali metal soap required in the final composition to form a powder, and then adding the balance of the soap in the form of shaped solids to the heat-dried composition. The aqueous slurry may contain not more than half the total amount required in the final composition, whilst the best results are obtained if the slurry does not contain soap at all and all of the soap is added afterwards to the heat-dried product. Suitable shaped solid forms for the balance of soap are noodles, flakes, ribbons, threads, granules, pellets and small spheres. The flow properties of the heat-dried powder are not affected by the incorporation therein of these shaped solids. The soap may also contain perfumes, germicides, colouring material, fluorescers, enzymes, tarnish inhibitors and corrosion inhibitors. The aqueous slurry may be prepared in any conventional manner by mixing the constituents with sufficient water, generally 45-55% by weight of the final slurry. The heat-drying is preferably carried out in a spray-drying tower. The alkali metal polyphosphate is preferably sodium tripolyphosphate and the detergent composition may contain nitrilotriacetic acid and sodium tripolyphosphate in an amount of 20-50% by weight of the final composition, in which the nitrotriacetic acid and sodium tripolyphosphate are preferably in a molar ratio of 4 : 1 to 1 : 4. Preferred non-ionic synthetic detergents are condensation products of alkylene oxides with organic hydrophobic compounds, e.g. condensate of nonylphenol and 10 molecules of ethylene oxide, preferably in an amount from 1-10% by weight of the final composition. Preferred anionic synthetic detergents are the alkali metal salts of the reaction product of sulphating or sulphonating agent with an organic sulphatable or sulphonatable compound, e.g. sodium alkylaryl sulphonate, preferably in an amount of 2-20% by weight of the final composition. Conventional soaps are used, preferably in an amount from 1-10% by weight of the final composition. Additional ingredients specified are water glass, sodium carboxymethyl-cellulose, soda ash, sodium toluene sulphonate, EDTA sodium thiosulphate and sodium perborate. |
