activated metal is pref. linger purity Al or Mn (99.9% pure, pref. 99.99%) amalgamated in the presence of hydrogen ions (source (in)org. acid) with a metal of atomic volume similar to H. This is very potent agent in presence of hydrogen or hydroxyl groups (H+, OH-, HO2=, e-) to reduce or oxidise pollutants to innocuous cpds. Pollutants can be oxides of S, C, N, halogen cpds. inorg. acids. PO4- group cpds. cyanides etc.
