Enzymic acylation of 7-amino-3-cephem 4-carboxylic acids - with phenyl-glycine derivs and Pseudomonas melanogenum cells

Title cpds. of formula (I):- (where R = H or OH, pref. in 3- or 4-position; R1 = OCH3 or -CH2-Z in which Z = OH, 1-4C alkoxy, 1-4C alkylthio, carbamoyloxy or a gp. of formula (II) or (III), in which Q = O or S; R2 = 1-4C alkyl; M = H or alkali metal) are prepd. by incubating, at 30-35 degrees C., a pH of 6-7 for about 90 mins., a cpd. of formula (I; where -CH(NH2) etc. is -CH(NH2)-C(O)-OCH3) and a cpd. of formula (I; where -NH-C(O)- etc. is -NH2) in an aq. suspension contng. Pseudomonas melanogenum ATCC 17808. (I) is isolated from the filtrate/supernatant by pptn. and/or chromatography.
