The one piece metallic locking device (2) has two legs (4), each having the form of slightly less than half an annulus, joined by a bridging piece (3). For installation in the groove of a shaft (1) this bridging piece is formed at right angles to the plane of the legs, so that the legs are permitted to open by the flexing of the bridging piece. To lock the washer in position, the bridging piece is straightened to a position coplanar with the legs, thus providing a very high resistance to the opening of the legs whose inner edges fit into the annular groove on the shfat.
