The rotating shaft (1) has a collar (2) and passes through a hole (3) in the machine housing (4) and the seal assembly is located in the chamber (5). A graphitic-carbon thrust ring (6) is fitted to the shaft and is pressed against the end wall of the housing by the polished steel ring (8) and the elastic sealing ring (7). The cooling and lubricating liquid enters the chamber (5) by the hole (12) and leaves by the hole (13). The chamber (5) is sealed from the working part of the machine (9) by the lip seal (11). The spring (10) together with the high pressure in the machine (9) ensure that the ring (8) is always pressed against the carbon ring (6).
