Collection of fractions in liquid stream - using open or closed trough with vessels fed from it

Liquid streams which contain successive fractions of different compsn. which must be collected and kept separate, can be so collected by using a trough which runs at a level above a series of vessels which have inlets running off the trough. As the liquor flows along the trough, the first vessel is filled until it will take no more liquid and then the liquid flows on along the trough until the next vessel begins to fill. So successive vessels are filled in turn. The trough can be horizontal or can be slightly downwards inclined (i.e. =30 degrees, esp. is not >15 degrees) in the direction of flow. The method is esp. applicable to mass transfer operations, esp. ion exchange processes.
