Improved vacuum arc devices include an hermetically sealed envelope evacuated to a hard vacuum and including a pair of gas-free arc-electrode assemblies each of which has a surface-adjacent portion thereof adapted to sustain the footpoint of a vacuum arc. The arc sustaining portion of at least one arc-electrode includes titanium as a base constituent and another constituent having a relatively high vapor pressure as compared with titanium, but having a vapor pressure of less than 10<->3 torr at a pressure of 500 DEG C. In a preferred embodiment, the minor constituent comprises beryllium.
