Preferably the hydrolysable compound has at least 3 hydrolysable groups, particularly four such groups. The hydrolysable compound may be applied from an organic medium or, unless the degree of hydrolysis is too great, from an aqueous medium. The hydrolysis may require heating. The polyhydrolysable compound may be an acylate of orthotitanic acid or titanium lactate. The polytetrafluoroethylene may be applied as an aqueous dispersion which may contain a surfactant and/or a water-repellent Suitable additives are a fluorinated acrylate or methacrylate polymer.
