Electronic ignition system for IC engine - has piston position sensors controlling ignition coils

The engine (1) has a crankshaft (7) carrying two bosses (8) and (9) so arranged that when the front faces (13) and (14) pass the electronic pick-ups (10) and (11) the piston is at its bottom position, but when the rear faces (16) and (17) pass the pick-ups the piston is at top dead centre. Signals from the pick-ups (10) and (11) are fed through the inverter gates (18) and (23) and through the OR gate (22) into the computer (24). The impulses from the computer together with the signals received from the AND gates (19), (20) and (21) provide the required ignition current through the coils (25) and (26) and the electrodes (27) and (28). The computer (24) ensures that the ignition timing suits the engine speed.
