Damped axles for rail vehicles - with damped inertial masses rotating with axles to eliminate transverse vibrations

The rotating axles of the rail vehicles are fitted with inertial masses which rotate with the axles and which are free to move axially under damping forces. They are balanced to dampen out any transverse vibrations of the axles, irrespective of the axle speed. They include mechanical dampers, hydraulic systems, electromagnetic or elastic damping. The most common transverse vibration provides sinusoidal forces between the wheel flanges and the rails and can lead to heavy wear and instability of high speed trains. The invention eliminates this vibration and increases the effective speed of the trains.
