To connect plastic pipes and fittings by means of welding, a heating element comes into contact with the two areas which form the welding seam. In order to form a uniform welding seam between a pipe and a fitting, the fitting has a stepped location which after having been brought into a molten state, receives the pipe which is in the same plastic state. The internal and external welding seams which are obtained when the two parts are pressed together prevent the formation of cracks when the welding is subjected to bending stresses.
