A metallurgical converter, consisting of a barrel mounted in a ring which is supported at two diametrically opposite points so that barrel can be tilted on a horizontal axis, the base of the barrel being fitted with tuyeres for injecting refining materials, has one of the ring supports formed as a trunnion, whereas the other is a wheel, fixed solidly to the ring, and supported on bearings; the tuyere feed pipes converge on the inside wall of the wheel and are connected, across its rim, to the ends of flexible tubes rolled round a drum fixed on the outer wall of the wheel; the other ends of the flexible tubes are connected to fixed feed pipes, sufficient slack being provided to permit the tilting of the converter. The flexible pipes are pref. used also for circulating a coolant round the converter mouth. For supplying oxygen, reducing agents (fuel, natural gas, steam etc.), nitrogen etc. in steel making by new processes, e.g. the quiet basic oxygen process.
|
