A yarn winding device includes a bobbin support arm on which a bobbin is supported and a drive roller contacting the bobbin rotates it as yarn is fed onto the bobbin by a transverse arrangement to form a package. As the package dia. increases the bobbin support arm moves away from the drive roller and the position of the bobbin support arm is measured and the signal used to control the pressure of fluid supplied to a cam acting to move the bobbin support arm away from the drive roller. A constant pressure is thus exerted by the drive roller on the package to produce a better wound package.
